Have you ever witnessed someone who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol getting behind the wheel and you're uncertain about what steps to take? This article could provide some valuable guidance…
Whether you find yourself at a pub for a work function or are hosting a Christmas gathering, it is strongly recommended that you intervene to discourage someone from drink driving, but only if you believe it's safe to do so.
- Speak to them - If this incident involves a friend, it can be highly beneficial to speak to them and convince them to take a taxi or offer them a place to stay. However, when dealing with strangers, it is particularly important to proceed with caution. If you are in a public place like a bar, club, or pub, inform security or bar staff immediately as they are trained to handle such situations.
- Call the police - Drink or drug driving is not just a violation of the law, it poses a serious risk to the lives of the driver, passengers, and innocent bystanders. Treat it as an emergency and dial 999 to report the incident to the police. If possible, provide them with the registration number, a vehicle description and any details about the person involved.
- Missed opportunity - If you miss the opportunity to report the incident in real-time and are aware of someone who has previously engaged in drink or drug driving, you can call the police on 101 or reach out to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
